Album

Are We There is the fourth studio album by the American singer-songwriter Sharon Van Etten. It was released on May 27, 2014 on Jagjaguwar. Of the lack of a question mark in the album's title, Van Etten said it was open-ended, I ask myself that question all the time, for my work, for my love, even for my friends. It's just really good to check in with yourself and it's a play on words, about touring and about travelling, being in transition. Sharon Van Etten writes from a place of free-flowing honesty and vulnerability to create a bond with the listener that few contemporary musicians can match. Are We There' is a self-produced album of exceptional intimacy, sublime generosity, and immense breadth. released May 27, 2014. Are We There may be Sharon Van Etten's most present-tense album to date, her most immediate and urgent-the peak of a steady upward trajectory. Her songs emphasize the moment, both in the quality of her performance and in the rawness of her lyrics. New York singer-songwriter Sharon Van Etten tests patience with a slow burner of a new record. What did you think of this album. Van Ettens confessional rawness is still thankfully intact and the music is still remarkable, fortified as it is by the sheer absorptive power of one human communicating seemingly directly to another through an artistic medium. Theres a great clip on YouTube of singer-songwriter Sharon Van Etten playing People Aint No Good, by Nick Cave, whom she toured with last year. Its a telling footnote to her magnificent fourth LP, which grows her trademark examinations of romantic decay to cathedral-like scale. Like Cave, her darkness contains multitudes. The tonal purity of Van Ettens voice, and her remarkable feel for harmonies, remain her signatures. But after all the heart surgery, the closer, Every Time the Sun Comes Up, pulls back the curtain a bit: People say Im a one-hit wonder, but what happens when I have two she asks cheekily. Define hit as you like that shes a wonder, theres no doubt. Brooklyn singersongwriter Sharon Van Etten's transfixing voice and often heart-wrenching songs come through in an odd mixture of pain and flourishing inspiration on the best moments of her fourth album, Are We There. The album, produced by Van Etten herself with some help from New York-based producer Stewart Lerman Elvis Costello, Sophie B. Hawkins, follows her 2012 outing Tramp and trades up on some of the crushed indie templates of that album for new stylistic territory
